The brain, premium extra virgin olive oil and the MIND approach to nutrition
Large-scale nutritional studies are looking deeper into how the brain responds to diet - in measurable ways. Now researchers have developed what’s known as the 'MIND diet', a way of eating specifically designed to slow cognitive decline.
It combines two of the most studied dietary patterns in the world, the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet, and refines them for one purpose: protecting the brain.1
The structure is: more leafy greens, vegetables, berries, nuts, beans and whole grains - and olive oil as the primary fat. It’s also about consuming less of the things that drive inflammation: processed foods, excess sugar, fried foods and high levels of saturated fat.
What The Research Shows
Across multiple population studies, people who follow 'MIND' eating closely show slower cognitive decline and a lower risk of dementia.2
In some cases, the reduction in Alzheimer’s risk has been significant, even when people only follow the diet moderately well.3
The British Medical Journal recently published another study that showed the MIND diet was associated with slower brain structural atrophy, in other words less grey matter loss.4
These findings support the MIND diet as a strategy to support brain health and delay structural brain ageing. And the effects appear to extend further. In Parkinson’s research - those adhering more closely to this way of eating experienced a delayed onset of symptoms - in some cases by years.5
Why MIND Works
At a biological level the pattern is consistent. The foods emphasised in the MIND diet are rich in polyphenols, antioxidants and healthy fats - compounds that help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain. They also support blood flow and vascular health, which directly affects how well the brain is nourished over time.
The Role Of Olive Oil
Used daily, in place of processed or unstable fats, olive oil becomes one of the primary carriers of these protective compounds, effectively signalling to the body, consistently, to operate in a lower-inflammatory, more stable state. While no diet can eliminate risk entirely, the idea that brain decline is inevitable is no longer stacking up. What you eat consistently, shapes how your brain ages.
One further note: whilst the quality of olive oil in these studied was not parametered, we know commodity chain olive oils, which likely have very polyphenol levels to start with, can suffer to the point of polyphenol exhaustion - before the customer has even put them in their shopping basket.
Buying properly certified extra virgin olive oil is your best protection against inferior products.
